The Carbohydrate Research Award

Given every two years, the Award was established in 2001 by the Editors and Publisher of “Carbohydrate Research”. The “Carbohydrate Research Award for Creativity in Carbohydrate Chemistry” is presented to a carbohydrate scientist, no older than 15 years past the PhD, who has made significant original contributions to the field, in its broadest sense.

Martina Delbianco
Martina Delbianco,
MPICI, Potsdam,
Germany
Dr. Martina Delbianco earned her BSc in Chemistry (2009) and MSc in Organic Chemistry (2011) at the University of Milan (Italy). In 2014, Dr. Martina Delbianco received her doctorate from Durham University, where she performed studies on lanthanides complexes and applications under the supervision of Prof. D. Parker in collaboration with Cisbio Bioassays (France) in the Department of Chemistry. In 2015, she moved to the Max-Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces as a post-doctoral Fellow in the group of Prof. Peter Seeberger, where she then became a Minerva Fast Track Fellow (2017-2018) and group leader (2018-2023) and is now a W2 Research Group Leader with Tenure since 2023.
Dr. Martina Delbianco is leading the “Carbohydrate Materials” group, which includes scientists (Ph.D. students and post-doctoral researchers) with different backgrounds (chemists, material scientists and engineers). Her approach has proven very successful in gaining a basic understanding of carbohydrate structure and aggregation. During her studies she discovered that carbohydrates self-assemble to generate three-dimensional structures, including particles, fibers, or gels which has open a new area of research. She currently holds an ERC Starting Grant (2023 – 2027 GLYCOFOLD).
