THE EUROPEAN SOLIDARITY CENTRE (ECS)

The European Solidarity Centre (ECS) is a museum and cultural institution dedicated to the history and legacy of the Solidarity movement, which played a crucial role in the fall of communism in Central and Eastern Europe. Opened in 2014, the ECS commemorates the achievements of the Polish people in their fight for freedom, human rights, and social justice, starting with the shipyard strikes in Gdańsk in 1980 led by Lech Wałęsa, which eventually gave rise to the first independent trade union in the communist bloc: “Solidarity.”

The ECS building itself, a modern architectural landmark, symbolizes the resilience and determination of the Solidarity movement. Designed to resemble the shape of a ship, it pays tribute to Gdańsk’s maritime heritage and the historic shipyards where the strikes took place. Inside, the museum offers a powerful, interactive experience. Visitors can explore multimedia exhibits, archival materials, and personal testimonies from Solidarity members. The museum not only provides historical context but also showcases the broader global impact of the Polish quest for freedom, emphasizing the importance of solidarity, democracy, and human rights worldwide.
